Aakash-2 to be launched in Feb 2012

HRD minister Kapil Sibal said that a better and improved version of Aakash will be available in February next year.

Aakash 2 will have 1 GB RAM that will allow faster multitasking compared to 256 MB RAM of current version. Microprocessor will be 800 MHz which is now 366 megahertz only and new version will allow to download videos from YouTube, of course you will need a good internet connection for that.

New version will come with an inbuilt camera in front which can be used for online video chatting or use of Skype. Video chatting will help people to connect at cheap price.

Improving all these feature with a 7 inch touch screen will make Aakash 2 more competitive with other tablets in market. Price for Aakash 2 will be same as first version of cheapest tablet Aakash, $49.

HRD ministry said, “We have to evolve an eco-system of several vendors and its testing by IITs and other institutes to provide an Aakash to each child by 2017 (end of 12th plan).”

In Aakash there were only three companies but government believes that Aakash 2 will see better collaboration of IT companies. World Bank and several Prime ministers have shown interest in buying cheapest tablet for children.

Aakash has created lot of global buzz for being cheapest tablet. It may be not fast and useful as current available tablets but at the price it beats all the competition. Government’s target to offer the tablet to 2 million students is still a challenge.

“We have to evolve an eco-system of several vendors and its testing by IITs and other institutes to provide an Aakash to each child by 2017 (end of 12th plan),” a senior HRD ministry official said
